How to play Texas Holdem

A Texas Holdem table generally contains either eight or ten players, with each player making his move in a turn based format.

Before the cards are dealt, one of the players is nominated as the dealer, and a white button placed in front of him to illustrate his new role to the rest of the table. The dealer is changed after every hand, with the player to the left of the current banker being placed in the role.

Paying the blinds

Before any cards are dealt, the two players to the immediate left of the dealer are asked to put some money into the middle of the table to get the pot started. The player to the immediate left of the dealer is known as the “small blind” with the player to the left of him being named the “big blind.”

As the role of dealer changes after every hand, the roles of the big blind and the small blind will rotate around the table as well.

Exactly how much the small and big blinds put into the middle of the table depends on the stakes that you’re playing for. Generally speaking, the small blind is half the size of the minimum bet where as the big blind is equal to one bet.

For example, if you were sitting down to a $2/$4 ring game, the small blind would be worth $1 with the big blind being $2.

Dealing the hole cards

With the blinds in the middle of the table, the dealer can now give each player two cards face down in front of them. These cards are known as the hole cards and are dealt one at a time with a second card only being given, once every player has received his first card.

The first round of betting then starts with each player asked to raise or match (‘call’) the size of the big blind. If a player doesn’t want to do that, then they are forced to fold and must push their cards (still face down) into the middle of the table.

The action starts with the player to the left of the big blind and goes round the table in a clockwise fashion until everyone has had a chance to act.

When the action comes to the small and big blinds, the chips that they’ve already put on the table count towards any bets that they need to make.

The Flop

When everyone has had a chance to act, and all remaining players have placed similar sized bets into the middle of the table, three cards are dealt face up in the middle of the table.

These three cards are known as “The Flop” and can be used by all of the players to help improve their hand.

Once these cards have been dealt a second round of betting starts with the player to the left of the dealer being the first person to act this time.

The Turn

When the second round of betting is all evened up, a fourth card (“The Turn”) is dealt face up in the middle of the table. This triggers off a third round of betting for those players who are still involved in the action.

The River

A fifth and final card (The River) is dealt face up on the table. This is the last card that players will see and so they therefore now know what their best possible poker hand is.

A final round of betting follows. If there are two or more players left after this final round of betting, all players proceed to The Showdown.

The Showdown

The betting is now over and all that remains is for the players to turn over their hole cards. The player with the best five card poker hand (using the community cards in the middle of the table) is declared the winner and picks up all of the chips in the middle of the table.
